Abdominoplasty associated with the surgical treatment of the ventral external abdominal hernias
Abstract
Background: the concomitance of abdominal lipodystrophy and of ventral abdominal hernias is frequent. It is required to apply combined surgical techniques for a comprehensive reconstruction of the abdominal wall. Objective: to describe functional and esthetic results in patients with abdominal lipodystrophy and ventral external abdominal hernias operated on at the “Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna” Hospital of Las Tunas, from January 2014 to December 2017.Methods: a prospective longitudinal descriptive study was carried out with patients with abdominal lipodystrophy and ventral external abdominal hernias who received a combination of the surgical techniques of abdominoplasty and hernia repair, treated at the aforementioned institution and during the period herein declared. The sample included 37 female patients with IV degree abdominal lipodystrophy. Results: the average age was of 37,68 years, with a prevalence of patients of the 25 to 39 age group. Umbilical hernias were the most frequent ones (47,62 %), while Rives hernioplasty was the surgical technique mostly used (71,43 %). Seroma was the most frequent complication (44,44 %). The patients very satisfied with the results prevailed (86,4 %).Conclusions: the repair of the abdominal lipodystrophies and ventral hernias in a combined way is a safe procedure, it may contribute to the decrease of the hernial relapses and produces a high degree of satisfaction among the patients.
