The Benedictine Transformation of the Roman Villa Life

Abstract

The present article discusses some aspects of the daily monastic life as described in the Regula Benedicti, the leading Rule within the Western monastic movement. It concentrates on the Rule’s relation to the Roman conception of villa life, with a view both to continuity as well as to discontinuity.
