Anthonie Blocklandt and Italy
Abstract
Among the several studies dedicated to the northern Europe artists travelling in XVI century in Italy, stands out the lack of detailed work about Anthonie Blocklandt van Montfoort (1533/1534-1583), a noble origin painter from Utrecht, who was in Rome in 1572. My articles focus on the very first works made by Blocklandt - according to stylistic analysis and few information - after his journey in Rome, one of the least known period of his activity.Starting from his interesting for Parmigianino and his controversial relationship with Michelangelo, as reported by biographer Karel van Mander, the article tries to find which models Blocklandt can have turned his attention during the stay in Rome and who others artists he can allegedly have met.Anthonie Blocklandt van Montfoort, Karel Van Mander, Utrecht, Roma, Oratorio del Gonfalone, XVI s.
