Unlike when wage-earners commit suicide, there is no systematic reference to self-employed individuals’ work situation when they do the same – despite their greater propensity for such an act. The article reveals that voluntary deaths are a particularly acute problem among farmers who harbour passionated feelings about their work, an engagement that can be partially explained by the profession’s statutory independence and autonomous status. When farmers’ independence is threatened, they no longer find meaning in their work, triggering a suicidal crisis that can have tragic effects.
