In the current paper, we seek to highlight aspects of the criticism produced by the poet João Cabral de Melo Neto in favor of a literature committed to a social reality and to a communication with his readers in the 1950s when, after being removed from the position of vice-consul in London, remained in Brazil to be inquired, accused of subversion. This is an important moment in the path of this writer whose poetry was created in an ongoing process of poetry search and criticism.
