Focusing on the example of two provinces situated in the northern and southern confines of the immense Empire of Brazil (Maranhão and Rio Grande do Sul, respectively), this article hopes to depict in broad terms the gradual extension of the frontiers of the literary field during the Segundo Reinado, from its epicentre, the capital Rio de Janeiro. The rise of a small but active literary milieu in each of these two provinces bears witness to two different ways of integrating these « little homelands » into the heart of Letras Pátrias, with which they maintain an often complex filial relation.
