El Criticón, by Gracián, was first printed in 1651 (first part), 1653 (second part) and 1657 (third part). The first attempt at a critical edition was made by Miguel Romera-Navarro in 1938-1940. Since then, a little group of courageous and brilliant scholars has made a lot of progress to achieve the objective of a truly critical edition of this masterpiece, by putting together and sorting the neccesary textual evidence and by discussing the philological matters involved. This paper seeks to help to accomplish that goal. It calls attention to 11 mistaken passages in the editio princeps that critics have not noticed yet and suggests how to restore the voluntas auctoris.
