Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) Case-Based Questions for Medical Students in PEM Elective
Abstract
Abstract Due to seasonal variation of disease and trauma in pediatric emergency medicine (PEM), medical student experiences can be variable. In order to create a more even learning experience, some general diseases were identified and cases were created to assist student learning using a self-paced module. Students are exposed to key articles related to the cases within the field of PEM to encourage them to use the literature to expand their medical knowledge. Cases with accompanying questions (internet links or descriptions) and suggested bibliography are provided to the students at the beginning of the PEM elective. Students are given the cases and bibliography at the beginning of the rotation and submit answers to the instructor for feedback. The instructor reviews the answers and provides comments to the student based on the objectives described for each case. Cases and questions on the elective have been sent to students in the pediatric emergency department for the past 4 years and nearly 40 students have completed the assignment. Feedback has been positive regarding the type and length of the cases, as the information either reinforces patients evaluated in the emergency department or enhances concepts not seen during the elective rotation. Students appreciated the articles in the bibliography as a resource to assist with answering the cased based questions.
