Benign sclerosing stromal tumor of the ovary: report of a patient

Abstract

A 22-year-old patient presented with a slowly but progressive swelling of the abdomen, cough and dyspnea on exertion of five months’ duration and menometrorrhagia. It was verified a well defined abdominal mass in the pelvic cavity, associated with Meigs syndrome. The histopathological diagnosis was benign sclerosing stromal tumor of the ovary. It is considered a very rare neoplasia, with incidence in the second and third decade of life. It may be associated with ascites and sometimes in combination with right-sided pleural effusion, which leads to Meigs syndrome. The clinical manifestations may lead to a mistaken impression of inoperable ovarian neoplasm. The case is reported because of the poor incidence in scientific literature reviewed, by its distinctive morphological features and because it is an operable tumor. The removal of the tumor led to the disappearance of the described clinical manifestations.
