HYBRID DISCOURSE FORMATS: CLASSIFICATION ISSUES
Abstract
The article deals with a relevant linguistic issue of discourse typology. The authors pay special attention to the place of hybrid discourse formats in discourse classification. The study focuses on structural properties of hybrid discourse formats and is aimed at characterizing their peculiarities and typological features. The study is based on the material of military-political and military media US discourses that concern the Middle East problem: Iraq (2002–2005) and Syria (2012–2015) Wars. The material is investigated through typological, comparative and critical discourse analysis methods. Discourse description is based on the list of components developed by V. I. Karasik. The list consists of participants, chronotope, aims, values, strategies, materials, genres, precedent texts and discourse formulae. The hybrid formats are a combination of base discourses (military, political, media discourses). Military discourse determines the conceptual components of hybrid formats, while political and media discourses characterize their content-related components. The authors argue that such inter-discourse relations cannot be treated as a mere discourse overlapping: the mutual penetration and integration of characteristics generate a completely new discourse type that is not equal to a simple sum of the parts. The authors come to the conclusion that despite a common discourse base and a number of integral components (chronotope, strategies, «discourse traps», topics, genres, precedent texts, discursive formulae) military-political and military media discourses are completely different in terms of such key components as agents, aims and values. The results of the study are of interest to a wide range of Russian and foreign specialists in discourse analysis, political linguistic, political science, international relations and international law. They can be applied to teaching these disciplines at institutions of higher education.
