Abstract
Turkish soap operas convey an alternative modernity characterized as much by the norms dictated by the patriarchal system as by the social conservatism imposed by the government currently in power in Turkey. Drawing on data collected in an ethnography of female Greek viewers of Turkish soaps, the author seeks to illustrate the potential for and nature of pop culture audiences’ resistance to the hegemonic system through the lens of gender. This case study revealed that the resistance of these “meaning receptors” to the power dynamics imposed on them is not always oppositional to the media text, nor necessarily progressive.
