Indicator system for assessing sustainable development in Egyptian new cities under water scarcity issue
Abstract
AbstractEgypt is currently facing many challenges related to the sustainability of new cities, and many current environmental and urban problems to achieve the goals of environmental sustainability as desired globally, while neglecting standards for achieving sustainability under scarcity of water resources, and proposal of establish new cities to accommodate the increase in population and their needs. Also, the current planning thinking of the Egyptian new cities is not compatible with global requirements, and it also lacks realism and flexibility in dealing with global environmental issues, including the issue of scarcity of water resources.The research problem is based on the absence of assessing the sustainability of development in new urban cities in Egypt under scarcity of water resources issue and the need to define an evaluation procedure to ensure the sustainability and raise the efficiency of the use of water resources in Egypt. The research starts from identifying the challenges facing water sustainability in new cities and a general study of criteria and indicators for the sustainability of development in light of the scarcity of water resources and determining criteria.Indicator system that contains a set of standards and indicators appropriate to the situation of new cities in Egypt, which achieve sustainable development in new communities in light of water scarcity and take into account the quality of life for people in various fields and that help in identifying gaps and weaknesses in the water sector in new settlements and then determining development priorities Which takes concept of sustainability.Key words: indicator systems, water city index, sustainable criteria, new cities, water scarcity
