Classifi cation is an important method of knowledge, aiming the evaluation and re-evaluation of the research object, arrangement of notions, of diff erent relations, etc. Along with defi nition and division, it is one of the logical operations that contributes to the hierarchy of a system elements. The role of classifi cation is also incontestable in terminology, because only in such a way can be revealed and argued the logical structure of the appropriate the systemic character, the diversity of relations between its multiple elements. In the present paper, various approaches have been reviewed on the classifi cation of terms and the criteria on which these classifications are based. Classifi cations logically accepted are made depending on the scope and content of the terms. On the basis of the other classifi cations are the features of the content, form, functional, intra- and extralinguistic terms. The actual terminological classifi cation starts from the general / special opposition and includes the following classes of categorial, generally scientific, interdisciplinary and narrowly specialized terms. The approaches presented in the article refl ect the diversity and complexity of terms, characteristics that determine more independent research directions: general, semasiological, onomasiological, functional, historical, descriptive, cognitive, textual terminology.
