Disregarding the Allies' ingratitude and the practical consequences of applying the principle of European balance of power, Tsar Nicholas I started the Crimean War in 1853. In 1856 Russia lost the war. The same year the Congress of Paris took place and the issue of the Romanian Principalities uniting was raised. The ide a of building this national state was supported by Emperor Napoleon III, later dubbed "Romania's godfather", but there were two strong opponents: Turkey and Austria.
