Diabetes in rural Haryana, India: A population-based study

Abstract

Diabetes is one of the largest global health emergencies of the 21st century. Each year more and more people live with this condition, which can result in life-changing complications. Globally, an estimated 422 million adults were living with diabetes in 2014. This study was conducted with the aim to assess the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus and associated demographic and risk factors. The present study was conducted in rural block Lakhanmajra of district Rohtak over a period of one year among 1000 study participants (15-64 years). Fasting blood sugar was measured to evaluate the prevalence of diabetes mellitus. Overall prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 9.2%. Prevalence was high among 55-64 years age group, females, illiterates, low physical activity, smokers and higher BMI. To conclude, prevalence of diabetes was high in the study population. A multidisciplinary approach targeting both individual and social factors is required to tackle this high prevalence. [J Med Allied Sci 2019; 9(2.000): 48-54]
