The Correlative Study of Human Body Stature with Foot Dimensions in Rajasthan Population

Abstract

Introduction: Body stature is an important key feature for the identification of biological profile of an individual. The estimation of body stature is a known important assessment in the identification of unknown human remains. Assessment of body height from different body parts is an area of interest for anatomists, anthropologists, forensic experts, and many more. The aim of the present study was to study the correlation between the dimensions of foot with the stature of an individual and to devise linear and multiple regression formulae in order to estimate stature from foot dimensions. Methodology: The present study was conducted on 407 human subjects (207 males and 200 females) from North Indian population. The subjects were in age group of 17 to 25 years. Body height was measured by stadiometer and the foot length and breadth was measured by a digital sliding caliper. Results: Mean foot length and breadth in males were 25.31±1.05 cm and 9.57±0.47 cm, respectively as compared to females (22.65±1.11 and 8.69±0.37 cm) and p value was found to be statistically highly significant. Coefficient of determination for prediction of height from foot length was much higher than foot breadth. Conclusion: Prediction of body stature with foot length can be done more precisely than with the foot breadth.
