A library as the third place. On the example of medical school libraries
Abstract
The article features libraries from a wide social and culture-forming perspective. The tasks and functions of libraries going beyond collecting, processing and disclosing information were established. Attention was drawn to the mediation nature of libraries, and to their role of an intermediary in social communication processes. The article puts emphasis on the fact that libraries can combine the offer of many other cultural centers, thus oftentimes they have functions similar to those of art galleries, museums or concert halls. The main conclusion, however, was that libraries are meeting places for local communities and a space where one can relax while doing something productive. That is why the concept of a third place was referred to. It can be implemented also by libraries functioning at centers for medical studies and centers for professional development of medical personnel, especially considering the fact that – according to librarians – medical students spend much more time on campus (and hence also in libraries, which are learning centers) than at home. The article attempted to present the solutions applied by selected medical libraries in the world. Some interesting projects were discussed based on analysis of the literature.
