Socioeconomic, technological, academic and health situation of obstetricians in training during COVID-19

Abstract

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the lives of university students, their teaching-learning modality, socioeconomic situation, and their physical and psychological health. Objectives: Determine the socioeconomic, academic, technological and health characteristics of obstetricians in training during the COVID-19 pandemic at a Peruvian public university. Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional study. 186 obstetricians in training participated. The type of sampling was stratified random probabilistic. A validated and reliable virtual questionnaire was applied. In the statistical analysis, absolute and relative frequencies, median and interquartile range were used. The research was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee. Results: In the socioeconomic situation, 91.5% reported a decrease in family income during the pandemic and 43.0% of household heads lost their jobs. In the technological situation, 36.0% received technological support from the university and 94.6% had problems with the internet service. In the academic situation, 97.3% consider that the academic load increased, 68.3% intended to leave the university and 29.6% abandoned a course. Regarding health, 35.5% had a diagnosis of COVID-19 without the need for hospitalization; the moderate to intense level predominated in stress symptoms; in depression, the moderate level; and in anxiety, the mild level. Conclusion: There was an impact on the socioeconomic, technological, academic and health situation in obstetricians in training, showing a significant frequency of stress and depression during the last period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
