Abstract

The military careers of two of the characters who feature most prominently in the story of Majuba Hill are related, namely that of Ian Standish Monteith Hamilton and that of Stephanus Johannes Roos. Their individual roles in the events that transpired during the Battle of Majuba as well as their roles in later battles, such as that of Roos against Mampoer the Mapog Chief and that of Hamilton during the Second Anglo-Boer War, are depicted. In his closing paragraph the writer of the article remarks that whereas the Battle of Majuba Hill was the beginning of a renowned military career for Hamilton, it was merely the culminating point of a short respite from his farming activities for Stephanus Roos.
