Abstract

This paper examines the civic role that semiotics can play, beyond its role as an interface for the humanities. For that it considers the three societies of semiotics: the producers (who does semiotics and why?), the frames (in which institutional context is semiotics done?), the consumers (in wich social areas did semiotics play a role?) To understand the dynamics of the discipline in those sectors, the article refers to concepts developed by the sociology of fields, and distinguishes a restricted semiotic field (the field of “semiotics for semioticians”) and a wide field of production and diffusion, where the discipline has mostly an ancillary function.
