The political engagement of young people has experimented a sort of revival in recent years in Mexico. Thus, political movements and organizations where young people play an important role proliferate in a context in which living conditions are rather difficult for most people in this country. The Mexican region of Puebla, located in the center of the country, is no exception to this, and groups of young activists emerge constantly. Different theoretical approaches have recently been developed to understand this revival of political action in Mexico and throughout Latin America. In this article, I discuss the advantages and limitations of these two approaches with respect to the study of political engagement of young people in Puebla. This is the theoretical model of the “plebeian interpellation” and the approach of citizenship developed by anthropologist Sian Lazar.
