The objective of this article is to present the “family program”, established in Colombia in 1954 to teach Family Medicine in medical education. This program fulfilled two objectives at Universidad de Antioquia: the first was to have conducted medical teaching, which was traditionally hospital medicine, in the fields of community and family practice. The second was the election and application of a family model with a fundamentally social approach. The experience of the “family program”, as told by a direct actor of the experience, first as a student and then as a professor is a reference for programs implemented in community environments, which are currently essential to promote a new transformation in Colombian medical education
