Diabetic mastopathy: A review of a breast carcinoma mimic
Abstract
Diabetic mastopathy is a rare fibro-inflammatory breast disease that closely mimics breast carcinoma. The disease predominantly affects insulin-dependent diabetics, and the etiology is still unclear. A proper physical examination, imaging, and core-needle biopsy usually lead to a diagnosis. Management is conservative and revolves around counseling the patient to allay fears and regular follow-up. In this review, we highlight the recent information on diabetic mastopathy with emphasis on historical background, epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, diagnostic approaches, and treatment choices.
