Evaluation of the profile and therapeutic itinerary of men with breast cancer in Pernambuco
Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the profile and therapeutic itinerary of men with breast cancer followed up in a specialized hospital in Pernambuco. Methods: This was a descriptive case series study. Nine medical records of men diagnosed with breast cancer followed up at Oswaldo Cruz University Hospital were analyzed. Results: Most men were over 60 years old (66.7%); 22.2% with no education; 33.4% with a positive family history; 67% with a nodule as the first sign; 66.6% had chemotherapy and 100% mastectomy. About the search for the first care, 88.9% sought general/emergency hospitals, only 11.1% primary care. At the end of treatment 77.8% of patients showed complete remission. Conclusions: The findings on profile and therapeutic itinerary subsidized the identification of these men and the path taken from the detection of breast cancer to cure. Some difficulties evidenced were the mens lifestyle, access to basic care, and lack of investments in health promotion.
