Analysis of the application of business process management in a section of a public university
Abstract
Although already widely employed in private companies, BPM (Business Process Management) is not extensively used in public organizations. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the use of BPM in a Technical Support Section for Education, Research and Extension of a public college with focus on the potential for improvement that a critical process might have by using this technique. The application of BPM in the International Relations Office of a Collegey comes up against bureaucratic impediments that hinder its implementation and also interfere with the agility of the process. However, the BPM has been shown to be applicable as a management tool and process improvement tool in public offices. In an initial application cycle, it was found that the principal gain is time reduction (from 46 to 15 days) and better coordination of activities. In this first cycle it became apparent that BPM made possible the understanding of potential problems and improvements in the process, which will result in significant quantitative and qualitative gains in this and other critical processes of the institution.
