This article discusses the role of social capital in the internationalization process of startups. Following the resource-based view, social capital is understood as a critical resource and building block for international competence. A special focus is put on how the digitalization of social networks has changed the playing field. Drawing from an analysis of social networks, the interplay of resources, capabilities, and competence, the construct of internationalization, and an understanding of the consequences of digitalization, a conceptual model is proposed. One of the key hypotheses deducted from this model is that the digitalization of social networks results in an accelerated internationalization of startups. Two exploratory case studies with Czech startups serve as a first test and reveal avenues for future research.
