This article focuses on artists’ collectives based on the theoretical framework of Erik Olin Wright’s emancipatory social science. The comparative analysis of theatre collectives in Portugal and Brazil highlights the precarious nature of artistic work, but it also reveals multiple resistances, through different dynamics of collective organization and action. Through two case studies, we demonstrate how some theatre collectives, as proposed by Wright, (1) elaborate a diagnosis and critique of the world and the capitalist system, (2) imagine and try to put “viable” alternatives into practice and (3) address the obstacles and possibilities for transformation. The central argument is that these collectives are emancipatory organizations that articulate their artistic language with new forms of social and production organization.
