This study relates to the singular personality of Jaime Bausate y Mesa (legally named Francisco Antonio Cabello y Mesa). This exceptionally proud character, who had to go off to France in exile for afrancesamiento reason in 1813, was also a leading journalist, who started his career for the Diario de Madrid before setting up the newspaper Diario de Lima in 1790, and then, in 1801 the Telégrafo mercantil de Buenos Aires. The Diario de Lima, improperly introduced by Jaime Bausate y Mesa as the first periodical set up in America, will be also analyzed, in particular in comparison with its renowned rival Mercurio peruano, which lasted two years more.
