Three types of metal oxide, magnesium oxide(MgO), zinc oxide(ZnO) and aluminium oxide(Al2O3), were added into carboxylated nitrile rubber (XNBR) to prepared XNBR/metal oxide composites, the properties of which, such as interactions between metal ions and carboxyl groups, curing characteristics of the compounds, dynamic mechanical properties of the valcanizates, micromorphology, mechanical pro-perties and the modulus-temperature relationship of the composites, were investigated thoroughly. The results showed the formation of ionic bonds between XNBR and metal oxide was close to the alkalinity of metal oxide. The metal ion with high charge number, small ionic radius and high electronegativity was benefit to the improvement in mechanical properties of composites under high temperature.
