Changes in stocks of soil organic matter (on carbon) and total nitrogen for the whole soil profi le (0-100 cm) have been determined in a long-term fi eld experiment with different systems of soil fertilization on cernozem soil in the steppe region Balti (northern part of Moldova). Mineral fertilizers are decreasing the stocks of soil organic matter and nitrogen on the whole soil profi le. Organic and organo-mineral systems of soil fertilization are decreasing in lower extent the stocks of nitrogen, but they contribute to the accumulation of soil organic matter, especially deeper than 40 cm. Potential capacity of soils to provide nitrogen for crops should be evaluated in each farm on different fi elds in order to make more reasonable economically and ecologically the application of mineral fertilizers.
