The Augustinian and Thomist philosophical tradition is the background to Sturzian thought, which analyses the antithetical and anti-juridical mentality widespread in all the fields that invested Catholics in the first post-war period. Peace and war are not hypostases that are over people’s heads; they bring everyone’s freedom and responsibility into play. The ecclesial Magisterium has always supported with realism and hope what concretely leads to peace, giving ethical principles regarding the person and the nations. The synthesis is given by the thought of Don Primo Mazzolari who, with farsighted prophecy, opted for the evangelical principle of respect for life, always and everywhere: Thou shalt not kill.
