After the coexistence of Romanian and Russian, which lasted until the subsequent prohibition of Romanian on the territory of Bessarabia occupied by the Russian Empire from 1812 to 1918, a period of substantial progress began with the Great Union and the creation of Greater Romania in December 1918. Despite a difficult (geo)political and economic context, for more than twenty years, the linguistic and educational evolution favoured the diffusion of the Romanian language (which had the status of an official language) and, to a large extent, the respect of the languages of the minorities living on the territory of the unified provinces, including Bessarabia in particular.
