The province of Limón in the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica is known for its high rate of poverty, the high unemployment and violence compared to the rest of the country. This article is a review of the history of the region through the images of the city of Limón between the nineteenth century and the year 1967, date of the celebration of the opening of Limón as an international port. The goal is to try to understand the current situation from the analysis of representations of the past. But more specifically, the work seeks to highlight the ethnic difference in the region as a major obstacle to its integration into the national set.
