Deep vein thrombosis and inferior vena cava agenesis
Abstract
We report the case of a 13-year old male patient who presented with a right swollen limb. A magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) revealed inferior vena cava agenesis (IVCA) which was regarded as the etiologic factor for the deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the patient. IVCA is a rare vascular abnormality which presents in 5% of young people aged under 30 years with lower limb DVT. It is usually underestimated but should be carefully considered in patients with no other apparent risk factors for DVT.
