National Institutional Systems and Innovation Performances of Nations
Abstract
This study aims to test which national institutional systems differ in terms of innovation performance. Combining different typologies of national institutional systems in the relevant literature, innovation input and output performances from 82 countries classified in 10 configurations are compared. The findings suggest that configurations involving countries dominated by the liberal economic system, cooperation, and generalized trust, differ from other configurations by their high innovation performance. Another important result of this study, the configurations such as state-led or family-led, in which the state and wealthy families are strong actors in the economic system differ from other configurations by showing low innovation performance.
