Home range and habitat use of reintroduced Javan Deer in Panaitan Island, Ujung Kulon National Park
Abstract
The Javan deer which inhabit Panaitan Island (± 175 Km2) were reintroduced from Peucang Island (± 4.5 Km2) during 1978–1982 (3 males: 13 females). The information of home range and habitat use of these animals were needed for wildlife habitat management especially in the small island habitat. We measured the home range size and habitat use of Javan deer in Peucang Island and Panaitan Island and compared them. The home range size was measured using Minimum Convex Polygon and then the polygon of home ranges were used to measure the habitat use. The results showed that in general the home range size in all age class of Javan deer between both islands did not differ significantly, only subadult males in Peucang Island which have a larger home range size than subadult males in Panaitan Island. Javan deer in Panaitan Island have found suitable conditions.
