O teatro das contradições: o negro nas atividades musicais nos palcos da corte imperial durante o século XIX
Abstract
This article draws a connection between black culture and the musical activities of theaters at the Brazilian Imperial Court during the nineteenth century, showing how performances mirrored the social reality of slavery. The complex web engendered from the stages of the Imperial capital comprises socio-cultural and politico-economic aspects and extrapolates certain time limits, thus establishing a continuum that links the Empire of Brazil to the former Portuguese colony, on the one hand, and to the later Republic, on the other hand, thus making it possible to identify significant features of Brazilian society.
