Treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) for Third-Year Medical Students
Abstract
Abstract This team-based learning (TBL) module covers how to effectively work together to manage patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and discuss the choice of the appropriate pharmacologic therapy. The students will also be asked to write a prescription for their choice. This TBL case is one of six bimonthly TBL modules used in the clinical pharmacology course that is offered to third-year medical students at the American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine. This case has so far been used more than 10 times. We did not evaluate outcomes of each individual module, so the positive outcomes we observed are for the course as a whole. Nevertheless, we have been observing a very high level of student-student interaction during all modules in general and it is our impression that students are satisfied with the modules. Other published TBL modules in this series address the treatment of diabetes mellitus type II, treatment of dyslipidemia, treatment of venous thromboembolism, pain management, and treatment of community acquired pneumonia.
