(Spreading of the Imperial cult and romanization of provincia Asia in the first c. AD: select issues): Asia was the first and by far the richest and most advanced culturally Roman province in Asia Minor where the very spread of Latin language was hindered by strong and established Greek culture. From the early-second c. BC Greeks in the East started to honor Rome by establishing cults of Goddess Roma and of prominent Roman politicians. The idea of the divine cult of a man, although accepted by Romans, was Greek. Under Augustus it further developed with establishing provincial assemblies, that in provincia Asia presided by asiarchs and provincial high priests. The Emperor was honored through prayer, sacrifice, games, singing of hymns, while his cult centered around provincial and municipal temples, well documented in coin images. Imperial cult was a principal tool of Romanization of Greek-speaking elite of Asia Minor.
