Energy dissipation downstream sluice gate using a pendulum sill
Abstract
In this paper, a new technique to increase the energy dissipation and reduce the floor length of the hydraulic structure, is introduced. This is done by using a pendulum sill downstream of the sluice gate of the hydraulic structure. A cylindrical steel sill with constant diameter of 3 cm was used. The location of the pendulum sill, the flow discharge and the gate opening were changed during the experimental work. The discharge capacity ranged between 2 and 4 L/s. The experimental results showed that using the pendulum sill increased the energy dissipation. It was found that the best location of the pendulum sill is in the first half of the hydraulic jump.
