The purpose of this research paper was to highlight the changes in the biochemical parameters of spirulina biomass under copper sulfate induced oxidative stress. The correlation between these parameters and the level of oxidative stress marker – malondialdehyde was evaluated, as well. The oxidative stress, induced by 5 mg / l copper sulphate (II), has been confirmed in Spirulina platensis CNMN-CB-11 by the decreased amount of biomass and its antioxidant activity, increased total lipid and malondialdehyde content, as well as by significant changes in protein and carotenoid content. Negative correlations (r from -0.892 to -0.756) have been established between the values of the oxidative stress marker - malondialdehyde and the protein, lipid and carotenoid content under oxidative stress. The values obtained using the ABTS assay closely correlated with the values of ferric reducing antioxidant power assay. Both methods are appropriate for assessing the antioxidant activity of spirulina biomass under induced oxidative stress.
