The zone of proximal development (ZPD) is, probably, the most known concept from Vygotsky's theory. And has been much discussed recently. Hoping to contribute for the understanding of this contemporary debate, we focus on recurrent themes in Vygotsky's writings. We read ten texts of his where he constructed the concept of ZPD. We have through the reading summarized his formulations about the following topics: criticism to the traditional diagnostic; explicit definitions of ZPD's concept; redefinition of imitation's concept; ZPD and pretend play; ZPD and the interaction between development and learning; ZPD and the interaction among daily and scientific concepts; practical value and theoretical value of ZPD's concept
