The availability of hydrogen storage materials with reliable safety, high capacity, moderate thermodynamic condition and fast kinetic performance is pressing urgent technological and scientific issues around the world. Hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNS) possess the B–N polar covalent bonds and usually large specific surface area, which make it a more promising candidate compared with its graphene analogs for solid state hydrogen sorption application. In this review, recent progresses of theoretical calculation on adsorption enhancement strategies such as lateral morphology design, non-metal element doping, and metal nanoparticles modification are summarized in depth. Moreover, we highlight some experimental research both on individual h-BNNS and its composite systems with metal hydrides, which exhibits a slight disparity with relevant predicted results. Overall, we believe this article gives a comprehensive presentation of state of art research and helpful perspectives for further improving h-BNNS's hydrogen storage performance.
