Brazilian speakers and Spanish speaking: a description of linguistic contact in Capanema city/PR

Abstract

The objective of this article is to demonstrate how Brazilian, monolingual speakers living in the border of Brazil and Argentina, the south-west region of Paraná/Brazil, assimilate language phenomena in contact as well as verify that evaluations related to the use of Spanish in the Brazilian context are generated from the uses of these speakers. The authors Moreno Fernández (1998) and Aguilera (2008) support the theoretical-based reflections. The corpus under analysis is composed of speech clippings from informers living in the city of Capanema participating project on beliefs and attitudes in a situation of linguistic contact, organized by researchers from Unioeste and UEL. We analyzed interviews obtained through the questions from a previously elaborated questionnaire to which the interviewees were submitted and that had as objective to verify how the speakers evaluate the language of the other, of the one that speaks in a different way. The depositions revealed both positive and negative evaluations about Spanish speaking, and in this context it was possible to observe even a certain reception in relation to the Argentinean Spanish speaking, which can be explained due to the proximity of Capanema city, which is located in the border between Brazil and Argentina.
