ABSTRACT The optimal duration of antimicrobial therapy for orthopedic hardware infections is unclear. We identified 216 patients with orthopedic hardware infections, of whom 42 (19%) later had relapsed infection. Chronic suppressive antimicrobial therapy beyond 12 weeks was not significantly associated with lower odds of relapse.IMPORTANCEThere is debate about how long to continue antibiotics after initial treatment of bone and joint infections when hardware remains in place. This study found no benefit from continuing antibiotics longer than 12 weeks when trying to prevent recurrent infection.
