Freedom of the Individual towards the Authority of the Church

Abstract

The article analyses the role of the Catholic Church as a deontic and epistemic authority. It discusses the problem of whether the Church’s authority undermines the autonomy of the conscience of the faithful. It then provides a justifcation for the thesis that while the Church wields authority in moral issues, its authority is of an epistemic nature.
