Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky as Wordy Wonder and Master of Visual Expression

The role of Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky in the history of Ukrainian literature is significant without exaggeration, and this statement does not and cannot be disputed, although the artist's works still provoke a lot of discussions and encourage the development of multiple interpretive models. Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky's creative work is well known not only to the Ukrainian reader, and not only in Ukraine, but also far beyond its borders. For more than a century and a half, Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky's literary activity has attracted the attention of many researchers. After all, the author is still interested in its variety of themes and literary trends, which synthesized the work of the writer, which led to the emergence of different, and, therefore, very often, opposite interpretations. Therefore, in our time, discussions and guidelines for interpreting the work of Mikhail Kotsiubynsky are still ongoing. The visual impressions are encoded into the verbal and visual images in works M. Kotsiubynsky’s prose. The writer depicts the various mental states of personages by means of the expedient colors and light contrasts. The writer cannot go beyond the specificity of the literature, but he can use the meaning of a word so as to cause a reader to an art impression. A reader is impressed by the writer’s skill to reveal psychological depth of characters using a word, fill the artistic language with irony and sarcasm. Thus, Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky's prose is a brilliant example of the dialogue between literature and related arts. As a master of psychological novels, Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky used the property of color to influence a person energetically. Verbal colors in the prose works of Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky are active pictorial and expressive means that influence the creative and figurative perception of the art canvas. The interaction of painting and literature in M. Kotsiubynsky’s works allowed the writer to focus on the states and moods of the heroes, while not inducing the appearance of external events. Researchers of the writer's life and work convincingly prove: Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky had wide cultural, artistic, and literary interests. For his time, the writer was one of those who stood at the center of the cultural movement in Ukraine. Therefore, interest in the work of Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky both in Ukraine and abroad remains at a consistently high level.
