In this paper, we consider a corpus of eighteenth century Brazilian manuscripts in order to shed some light on what kind of relationship exists between graphemes and phonemes. We intend to show that phonological phenomena, such as vowel variation, diphthong reduction, rhotacism and lambdacism, regularly found in Brazilian colonial manuscripts, have a European origin, rather than being a direct consequence of the linguistic contact between Portuguese and African or American languages.
