The care and parental care given to a child, coupled with the demands of everyday life, can cause anxiety and stress. The present study analyzes the parental stress of parents of children who attend the 2nd cycle of Basic Education in relation to some sociodemographic characteristics. The sample is made up of 50 parents, parents of 50 Portuguese children who attend the second cycle of a public school in the central region of Portugal. The Parental Stress Scale (Mixão, Leal, Maroco, 2010) and a sociodemographic questionnaire were applied. In general, the results revealed low levels of parental stress. Parental concerns, perceived lack of control and satisfaction were below the mean value. The dimension fears and anxieties scored above the mean value. Mothers showed greater parental concerns. Chronological age and marital status were not related to parental stress. Parents with higher monthly incomes revealed lower levels of parental concerns. Scores on the dimensions fears and anxieties, parental concerns and satisfaction were found to be similar in parents of one or more children. Self-perception of lack of control was greater in single-parent parents.
