Assessment of Nursing Cares related to Patient Safety in intensive care units (ICUs) with Standards
Abstract
Introduction: Improving of curative services quality is a most important problem in health services organization. Patient safety is denotes hospitalization with no harm or medical error . Error explosion possibility to become available to maximum Because of patient conditions and cure process complication in intensive care unit and it needs to serious attention. This study was conducted to determine the extent of observing patient safety standards by nurses in ICUs. Methods: In this descriptive study, 1998 nursing cares related to patient safety assessed using a researcher made checklist containing 37 items and 6 domains including Admittance and early evaluation, right procedure on correct local of patient body, avoid of incorrect connections, prevention of patient falling down, prevention of pressure ulcer, prevention of infection based on functionality in the morning shift for 54 nurses in three units of the selected hospitals of Yasouj University of Medical Sciences in winter of 2015 After determination of face and content validity (CVI=98.16) and reliability by calculation of intraclass correlation coefficient between observers (ICC=0.99), The data were analyzed by descriptive statistic. Results: Observing the 54 nurses function in ICU showed that, the conformity rate of nursing cares in patient safety, compared to the intended checklist (that it has 100 point), would be almost the undesirable amount 46.75. The maximum desirable compliance rate was for prevention of patient falling down (50.25), and the minimum compliance was for prevention of pressure ulcer (1.87) that was undesirable. Conclusion: Conformity rate of nursing cares with six domains related to patient safety in ICU, has distance from standards. To improve quality of curative services and patient safety, managers should be more emphasize on auditing, surveillance and continues education programs.
